Tail Biting

•TAIL BITING •

A pig farmer’s worst nightmare, aside from making continous losses due to a messed up supply chain.

We’ve not had an incident here since November 21 when I came back to Tile Barn. Bedding the pigs daily with fresh straw definitely helps us avoid this.

I’ve tail docked before on different farms. This is one of reasons it’s done but I’m glad I don’t do it anymore. I understand why it’s done but because I like a challenge, I’d rather try & tackle the reason why tail biting occurs rather than dock.

We use Stockholm Tar (a pine derivative with antiseptic properties) to stop this behaviour currently. It tastes like shit & it stinks which is enough of a deterrent to the pigs.
